The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) on Monday launched a QR code–based ticketing system for the Lucknow Metro, enabling commuters to book tickets from home through its official mobile application available on Android Play Store and iOS platforms. The new facility was formally inaugurated at Hazratganj Metro Station by UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar.Under the upgraded ticketing system, passengers can book QR tickets via the official “Lucknow Metro Official” mobile app, at designated ticket vending machines (TVMs), or through ticket counters at metro stations.Commuters booking through the mobile app will receive a digital QR ticket on their smartphones. Those purchasing tickets at counters or select TVMs will be issued printed QR tickets. To travel, passengers must scan their QR tickets at the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates marked with a yellow strip, both at entry and exit points. Scanning at both stages is mandatory for a valid journey.

UPMRC has installed new QR-enabled TVMs across all metro stations. Each station now has at least one QR-supported vending machine and one QR-enabled ticket counter. These machines also support UPI payments. Traditional token-based ticketing will continue through other vending machines.

Machines offering QR tickets have been marked with special “QR Support” stickers for easy identification.

Speaking at the launch, Sushil Kumar described the initiative as a “significant milestone” in Lucknow Metro’s journey towards smarter urban mobility.

“The launch of the QR-based ticketing system is a major step towards smart travel. Passengers can now book tickets from anywhere and enjoy a faster, simpler and more convenient travel experience. The initiative aligns with the vision of Digital India, where services are increasingly available at the tap of a button,” he said.

He further added that in line with the ‘One Nation, One Card’ vision, Lucknow will soon introduce the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) facility, similar to services already operational in Kanpur and Agra. Once implemented, commuters will be able to use a single card to travel across metro networks in multiple cities where the NCMC system is available.
