Verstappen takes it back! It’s a 1’18.792 and the fastest lap ever in Formula 1.

Piastri goes second, Norris takes pole for now with a record-breaking lap!

Tsunoda no better than eighth.

Alonso choosing to run quite close to Verstappen, and Bortoleto quite close to (his manager) Alonso as they start their final runs.

Tsunoda leads the field out followed by Leclerc, Hamilton, Piastri and Norris. Verstappen is next, with Alonso close behind, then Bortoleto, Antonelli and Russell – who is surprised to find he’s on softs instead of mediums.

Hamilton, Russell and Bortoleto also beat Norris so he’s seventh for now, though Hamilton has that penalty.

But Verstappen is faster still, the Red Bull driver takes pole for now with a 1’18.923.

Leclerc takes provisional pole with a 1’19.007 for Ferrari and the crowd roars.

Norris puts up a 1’19.433 without a tow. Piastri beats that handily with a 1’19.056.

Lambiase tells Verstappen that Tsunoda may have a battery problem.

Norris leads the field out for the start of Q3 – so no tow for him – followed by Antonelli, Piastri, Russell, Leclerc, Alonso, Hamilton, Tsunoda, Verstappen and Bortoleto.

Q2 is over and the following drivers are eliminated: Oliver Bearman, Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz Jnr, Alexander Albon and Esteban Ocon.

Norris makes it through in fifth but that was nervy stuff for him.

Sainz is out in 13th and Albon goes out in 14th – big disappointment for Williams.

Norris starts his last lap down in 11th so he must improve now.

Norris has timed his final lap well – he begins it with just a few seconds left.

Bearman gets up to seventh though and Norris is down to 10th and not improving.

Ocon goes no further – he’s 12th at best.

Oliver Bearman, 11th, improves his time in the first sector. So does Alonso, 12th.

Norris manages an improvement to go seventh, 1’19.451, but that’s not comfortable yet.

Currently in the drop zone: Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, Alexander Albon, Nico Hulkenberg and Lando Norris.

Norris is going to do two laps on this set of tyres which is risky with the field so close.

Verstappen goes top with a 1’19.140, a tenth ahead of Russell, Piastri – and Gabriel Bortoleto!

Norris snatches a brake and goes over the chicane. That leaves him without a time before the final runs.

Q2 has begun.

Q1 is over and the following drivers are eliminated: Isack Hadjar, Lance Stroll, Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson.

Ocon has made it through in 14th, great job by the Haas driver.

Alexander Albon takes 15th off Hadjar and puts him in the drop zone.

Isack Hadjar only manages 15th which is very vulnerable.

Verstappen goes second. Antonelli only makes it up to 11th with a 1’19.747 which might not be enough.

Russell is the only driver not running again, trying to get through on a single set of mediums.

Big pressure for Antonelli as he begins his lap.

Haas tell Ocon he might get a queue from someone leaving the pits – though it won’t help him at the start of his lap.

Esteban Ocon is unhappy about being at the front of the queue. He’s already 19th, so if he manages to get through without a slipstream it’ll be quite a feat.

Most drivers are likely to run again here. Verstappen is surprisingly down in 10th place.

The track falls silent as Sainz pits with just over five minutes left. Antonelli is surely going to need to run on softs to get through here.

Sainz moves up to third. Currently in the drop zone: Pierre Gasly, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Franco Colapinto, Esteban Ocon and Liam Lawson.

Russell goes fastest, 1’19.414.

A great lap by Fernando Alonso puts him second.

Albon goes ninth while Sainz begins a lap.

Verstappen told Red Bull to “check the floor” after he went wide at the exit of Lesmo 2. Carlos Sainz Jnr did the same and lost his lap time. He and team mate Alexander Albon are at the bottom of the times.

Norris goes to the top with a 1’19.611. Oscar Piastri is exactly a tenth of a second slower, he goes second.

Max Verstappen goes second, just a hundredth off Leclerc, but Lando Norris has just set the fastest time in the middle sector.

Charles Leclerc puts Ferrari on top with a 1’19.901. Hamilton slots in behind him, a tenth of a second slower.

Nico Hulkenberg does a 1’19.950 to go quickest on softs. Russell almost matches that on mediums and goes second.

Ferrari have been quick in practice but pole position will almost certainly not go to Lewis Hamilton today as he has a five-place grid penalty from the previous round.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is first out of the pits on a set of the medium compound tyres. His team mate George Russell is also on mediums while the Ferrari, Sauber, Alpine, Aston Martin and Haas drivers have all taken softs.

Qualifying is go at Monza.

The track temperature has risen to 44C with just under 10 minutes until the start of qualifying.

There is also a strong chance the all-time record for the fastest lap ever seen in F1 will be broken today. Norris’s 1’19.331 in final practice was 0.444s off the record set by Lewis Hamilton five years ago – an average speed of 264.362kph.

Lando Norris was fastest for McLaren in the final practice session at Monza earlier today. However it looks like being an incredibly close qualifying session – less than a second covered the entire field.

Qualifying for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix is coming up next.
