Kia Teases Wild Electric Successor to the Stinger

Kia Teases Wild Electric Successor to the Stinger

  • Kia teases what looks like its electric replacement for the Stinger.
  • The new four-door concept will be revealed “soon,” but the teaser video already gives us a good idea of what to expect.
  • This will likely become Kia’s version of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 in production form.

The Stinger is the only Kia that was ever truly fun to drive, with its BMW-like rear-wheel-drive handling dynamics and sporty fastback design. It was discontinued in 2023, leaving a distinctly Stinger-shaped hole in the Kia lineup, which hole the manufacturer vowed to fill with an EV but didn’t mention again until today, when it released this teaser video without saying what it’s showing.

This dramatic-looking fastback study is likely the concept that previews the Stinger’s electric replacement. We don’t get a very good look at it in the video, but we can make out some important details.

The roof shape is one. It’s closer to what we see on some coupe-like SUVs these days than it is to the original Stinger, but it’s certainly dramatic and it lends the car a sporty character. It doesn’t look like a crossover, though, and it has wide flanks that make it look like it has a factory widebody, making it look a bit like a racing or rally car with bolt-on fender flares that have been blended smoothly into the body.

At the eight-second mark in the teaser video, you can see just how much the flanks jut out. Another detail that stuck out is the placement of the daytime running lights. They sit on top of the hood and appear to go back way past the windshield, making the already pretty bonkers DRLs on the Lynk&Co 08 look tame.

Kia wants to keep it mysterious for now, only telling us that “A new future is on the horizon” and “our vision takes shape soon.” This concept could be a surprise debut at next month’s Brussels Motor Show, where Kia plans to reveal not only the EV2 but also spiced-up GT versions of the EV3, EV4, and EV5. It would actually make sense for this study to be present there alongside, but right now, we can only speculate.

Whatever Kia decides to call this new model—EV7 and EV8 are available—this will likely become the Kia equivalent of the Hyundai Ioniq 6. This means it will be built on the more expensive, 800-volt, rear-wheel-drive version of the E-GMP platform, so it will be a drift-ready machine with over 600 horsepower and a simulated combustion powertrain in its top GT trim.
