The transport department has again extended the deadline for installation of high-security registration plates (HSRP) to March 31.

In Aug 2023, the department made installation of HSRP mandatory for vehicles registered prior to April 1, 2019, by setting a deadline of three months. However, poor response from motorists forced the department to extend the deadline multiple times. Meanwhile, the issue also reached the high court. The state has 2 crore vehicles registered prior to April 2019, out of which, in the last one and a half years, close to 58 lakh were fitted with new number plates.

Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy told TOI: “The ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) mandated all states to make HSRP mandatory for security reasons and bring uniformity in specifications of number plates installed in vehicles. In the state, 1.2 to 1.5 crore vehicle owners are yet to follow the rules. As the issue is before the high court, the deadline has been extended.”

It is said in major cities such as Bengaluru, Mangaluru and Mysuru, there has been a good response to the move. However, in rural areas, the response to booking HSRP online remains poor due to logistics and other reasons.
