Karma’s $200,000 Amaris Luxury Coupe Is Real, And It Looks Stunning

Earlier this year, Karma Automotive said it was working on a sleek, two-door performance coupe that would use an extended-range powertrain. Back in March, we just had the California company’s word and a few computer-generated images.

That’s old news, though, because the Karma Amaris is real, as attested by a fresh batch of real photos released ahead of the car’s official debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering tomorrow. We also have new technical details, and they’re quite interesting.

The stunning two-door uses a pair of electric motors on the rear axle to deliver a maximum output of 708 horsepower and 676 pound-feet of torque. This is the car’s main propulsion, and it’s capable of catapulting the California-made coupe from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than 3.5 seconds, and on to a limited top speed of 165 mph, according to Karma Automotive.

A 41.5-kilowatt-hour high-voltage battery feeds energy to the electric motors for an estimated all-electric range of over 100 miles. However, there’s also a three-cylinder turbocharged gas engine that acts as a generator to replenish the batteries on the go. There’s no physical connection between the engine and the wheels, but with a full tank of gas and a full battery, the Amaris can cover over 400 miles.

Outside, there’s a blend of aluminum and carbon fiber, while the 22-inch forged aluminum Constellation wheels complete the look of the sleek two-door. Inside, there’s seating for two, with the rear part of the cabin reserved for luggage storage. Just like the latest and greatest from Ferrari and Audi, the Amaris has three screens on the dash–one for the instrument cluster, one for the infotainment screen and one for the passenger. However, the latter is only active if there’s someone sitting in the passenger seat.

Leather, suede, carbon fiber and piano black accents adorn the cabin, while an electro-chromatically adjustable glass roof can turn from transparent to opaque at the push of a button.

The Karma Amaris should go into production in the fourth quarter of next year, with a starting price of roughly $200,000. Let’s just hope that it works out for the small California outlet. It’s not lost upon us that, for the longest time, the Chinese-owned company has tried its best to stay afloat by using whatever was left from Fisker‘s first attempt at making a mass-market car, the Karma.
