India and Germany have stepped up efforts to jointly advance the next phase of India’s electric mobility transition, holding a high-level roundtable in New Delhi to outline a coordinated, ecosystem-wide strategy for EV adoption, according to a report by ANI. The discussion, hosted under the Indo-German Partnership for Green and Sustainable Development (GSDP), brought together senior officials from central ministries, state governments, city administrations, public transport undertakings, DISCOMs, financiers, industry representatives and international partners.

Key themes

According to a statement from the German embassy, both nations are prioritising five key themes for deeper cooperation: scalable financing, charging infrastructure and grid readiness, battery safety, multimodal electrification, and future-oriented workforce development.Participants emphasised that India’s ambitious EV goals can only be met through integrated planning across energy, mobility, manufacturing, finance and skills. Moving from fragmented pilot projects to a unified national approach was highlighted as essential for long-term impact.

The discussion also reviewed India’s growing policy framework for e-mobility, including the ₹10,900-crore PM eDrive Scheme for vehicle electrification and charging networks, the PM eBus Sewa programme deploying 10,000 electric buses through PPPs, and the ₹3,435-crore Payment Security Mechanism introduced in 2024 to support large electric bus operations. The Ministry of Power and BEE’s 2024 Charging Infrastructure Guidelines were noted as a significant step towards standardisation and interoperability.

Multimodal electrification

On multimodal electrification, experts stressed the need to integrate metro systems, bus fleets, shared mobility and last-mile services. Stakeholders also called for stronger coordination with DISCOMs to ensure grid readiness, improved battery circularity, and enhanced gender-inclusive skill development for emerging EV job roles. The dialogue reaffirmed India and Germany’s shared commitment to advancing clean, efficient and inclusive mobility. Both sides agreed to deepen collaboration across grid management, battery safety, multimodal planning and vocational training.Launched in 2022, the Indo-German GSDP framework aims to support sustainable, climate-aligned development and strengthen cooperation on solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.
