New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a virtual address at the ongoing India Energy Week 2025 on Tuesday said that India is rapidly advancing towards electric mobility, and swift action is needed to meet the demands of such a large country.

“There are immense opportunities for both innovation and manufacturing in the battery and storage capacity sector. Bharat is rapidly moving toward electric mobility. To meet the demand of such a large country, we need to accelerate efforts in battery production and storage capacity,” he said.

Refering to the Union Budget 2025, PM said the government has removed basic customs duties (BCD) on various components related to EV battery manufacturing to give a push to green energy.

“The National Critical Minerals Mission will play a key role in establishing a robust supply chain in Bharat. Additionally, we are promoting the development of a non-lithium battery ecosystem,” he added.

ETAuto reported on Feb 1 about the government exempting 35 additional goods from customs duty.

Ethanol Blending

PM Modi highlighted India’s target of achieving a 20% ethanol blending mandate as an example of how the country consistently achieves its goals ahead of time.

The country’s current ethanol blending rate of 19% is leading to foreign exchange savings, substantial farmer revenue, and significant reductions in CO₂ emissions, he said.

“We are on track to achieve a 20% ethanol mandate before October 2025,” Modi added.

India’s energy goals

He highlighted that by 2030, India presents numerous opportunities in the energy sector, such as adding 500 gigawatts of renewable energy (RE) capacity, achieving net-zero carbon emissions for Indian Railways, and producing five million metric tons of green hydrogen annually. Several major milestones will be achieved in the next five years.

“India is driving not only its growth but also the growth of the world, with the energy sector playing a significant role,” the PM said.

The use of natural gas is also set to grow in the coming years, creating numerous investment opportunities in this sector, he added.

Energy ambitions rest on five pillars

According to him, India’s energy ambitions rest on five pillars—harnessing resources, encouraging innovation, economic strength and political stability, strategic geography for energy trade, and commitment to global sustainability. These factors, he said, are creating new opportunities in India’s energy sector.

He also noted that India’s biofuel sector is poised for rapid growth, with 500 million metric tonnes of sustainable feedstock available.
