A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, can be the gateway to an all-electric vehicle. For people who are not yet sure if a full-on EV is for them, a PHEV can play a double role. It can drive in all-electric mode on short distances while also delivering a traditional road trip experience, where charging stops are not part of the equation.
The best PHEV crossovers for 2025 offer a decent amount of all-electric driving range, and some of these plug-in hybrids could cover your work commute without burning gasoline. That said, the gas engine is there, and it can kick in when needed. Just remember to top up the battery. Otherwise, you’ll be carrying around hundreds of pounds of dead weight, which won’t do you any favors. The fuel efficiency will drop dramatically, and you’ll have paid extra for nothing.
