With half a dozen rounds left in 2025, half of the qualifying battles between the team mates have been won.
But among the front runners the only fight left undecided is between the two drivers who are leading the championship fight.
Gaps between team mates
The two drivers who will share the front row of the grid for Sunday’s race won their qualifying battles at their teams long ago. Pole-winner George Russell was only out-qualified by rookie team mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the second time in Baku.
Max Verstappen hasn’t been beaten by either of his team mates all year. For Yuki Tsunoda, this was his 15th straight defeat since joining the team. That’s still considerably better than Lance Stroll, whose run of defeats to Fernando Alonso stretches back to the middle of last season.
Charles Leclerc has won the qualifying battle at Ferrari, with a 13-5 lead and only six rounds remaining. Lewis Hamilton’s form has been patchy, though he did beat his team mate today.
Finally, Isack Hadjar may have been infuriated with himself again after qualifying today but he did put one over Liam Lawson. This was particularly impressive as Singapore is one of the few tracks Lawson arrived at this year with prior F1 experience.

The most consequential qualifying battle this year is clearly at McLaren. Oscar Piastri holds a slight edge over Lando Norris which he’s translated into a 25-point lead.
Three other drivers hold slight leads: Pierre Gasly at Alpine, Oliver Bearman at Haas and Gabriel Bortoleto at Sauber. The latter saw his seven-race run of out-qualifying Nico Hulkenberg come to an end today.
Finally, it’s all square at Williams again. Carlos Sainz Jnr overturned his team mate’s lead at the last round, only for Albon to draw level again this weekend – a triumph which was rendered moot when both cars were disqualified.
