New Delhi: India’s motorsports rally driver Hari Singh went missing on Friday following a speedboat accident in the Maldives, even as Gautam Hari Singhania escaped with injuries and is recovering in Mumbai.
The incident took place near Felidhoo, where a speedboat carrying tourists capsized. Singh, 59, a five-time Indian National Rally Championship winner, has been missing for over 16 hours, with search operations by Maldivian authorities currently underway.
Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director of Raymond Group, was among those on board and was rescued. “Gautam Singhania suffered minor injuries following an unfortunate accident. He is recovering under due care in Mumbai. We thank you for the wishes and pray for the well-being of the affected friends,” his spokesperson said.Singh is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of rallying in India and currently heads operations at JK Tyre Motorsport.Fellow rally driver Gaurav Gill visited Singh’s residence in Chandigarh, while several members of the fraternity have expressed concern and extended support to his family.
According to reports, seven people were on board the vessel, including five men from India and two women from the United Kingdom and Russia. At least five passengers were swept into the sea when the boat overturned.
While several passengers, including Singhania, were rescued, search efforts are continuing for Singh and another missing individual.Authorities in the Maldives are continuing rescue operations as investigations into the incident remain underway.
