Formula 1 will return to the Autodromo do Algarve in Portugal as part of a new, two-race deal beginning in 2027.

The Portuguese Grand Prix will join the F1 calendar for the first time since 2021. The flowing, purpose-built track held its first grand prix in October 2020, as a result of the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and returned to the schedule the following May.

F1 is returning to Algarve as the championship seeks a replacement for the Dutch Grand Prix, which will take place for the last time at Zandvoort next year. The series’ efforts to add a new street race in Thailand have also encountered setbacks.

“The interest and demand to host a Formula 1 grand prix is the highest that it has ever been,” said “so I would like to thank prime minister Luis Montenegro, the minister of economy and territorial cohesion of Portugal Manuel Castro Almeida, the secretary of state for tourism, commerce and services Pedro Machado, president of Turismo de Portugal, Carlos Abade, president of the Algarve Tourist Board, Andre Gomes and CEO and chairman of the Algarve International Circuit, Jaime Costa for their support in bringing F1 back to Portugal.”

“I look forward to working together again to ensure that Portimao returns to the calendar in emphatic style,” he added.

The circuit near Portimao opened in 2008. F1 teams tested at the FIA grade one track over the following two years but the venue never held a round of the world championship under the 2020 pandemic, which forced the series to cancel many races outside Europe.

Lewis Hamilton won both the previous two races at the Algarve track. The Portuguese Grand Prix previously took place at Estoril between 1984 and 1996, and on street courses in Porto and Monsanto Park between 1958 and 1960.
