Former Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Chairman Osamu Suzuki has died at the age of 94. The company announced on Friday in a statement and said that he died of lymphoma on December 25.

Osamu Suzuki led the company for over four decades taking the maker of the Alto and Wagon R to the Number 4 car maker in Japan and the largest in India. He had been at the helm since 1978.

“With profound grief and sorrow we regret to inform that the Company was intimated today, about the sad demise of Mr. Osamu Suzuki, Director of the Company,” Maruti Suzuki has said in a statement.

Suzuki announced his retirement in 2021 at the age of 91, when his son Toshihiro Suzuki took over the reins of the Japanese automaker. His retirement marked the end of one of the longest tenures held by a promoter at the helm of an automotive company.

He was a strong believer in India’s growth story. He doubled down on the company’s investment in the country by forming a separate arm — Suzuki Motor Gujarat — as the competitive intensity increased.
