The FIA has suspended Derek Warwick from his role as a steward at the Canadian Grand Prix over comments he made to the media.
Warwick, pictured at last year’s race, has handed his duties over to Enrique Bernoldi for the remainder of the event. Bernoldi is not in Montreal and will participate in deliberations via the FIA’s Remote Operations Centre.
“Following recent unauthorised media comments, the FIA has taken the decision to suspend Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix,” said a spokesperson for the FIA.
“He will be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi who will be officiating from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva for the remainder of the event.”
The FIA confirmed Warwick will return to his role at the following race. “After discussion, Derek acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologised. Derek will resume his duties as a steward in the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix.”
In January, the FIA announced it had cut ties with ex-F1 driver Johnny Herbert after 15 years on its stewarding panel. The FIA said “it was mutually agreed that his duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible.”
However Herbert subsequently claimed the news of his departure took him by surprise and claimed the FIA had been lobbied to remove him from his role. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was among those who expressed support for the FIA’s decision to replace, calling it “absolutely the right decision”.
The FIA did not specify which comments of Warwick’s had prompted the decision to replace him. He gave an interview to a gambling publication last week in which he supported the Spanish Grand Prix stewards’ decision to penalise Max Verstappen for his collision with George Russell.
