Videos filmed by fans during yesterday’s Mexican Grand Prix have shed more light on Liam Lawson’s shocking near-miss with two marshals.
The Racing Bulls driver was outraged to discover two marshals on the track between turns one and two on lap three. The track was not under Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car conditions at the time.
Double waved yellow flags were being shown at the corner. Before Lawson arrived the marshals, who were stationed at post two on the inside of turn one, crossed the track to collect debris in the run-off area.
Lawson and Carlos Sainz Jnr had collided at that point on the circuit when the race began, dropping debris. The marshals picked up debris and began running back across the circuit to their post.
At this point Lawson arrived. The two marshals were running across the circuit in front of the Racing Bulls driver as he came out of turn one.
Lawson arrived on the scene by himself because he pitted at the end of lap two for repairs. He reached turn one approximately 20 seconds after the previous car, Franco Colapinto’s Alpine, passed by. After Lawson’s car passed through around 35 seconds passed before the next car, race leader Lando Norris, reached turn one.
The near-miss with the two marshals clearly shocked Lawson, who told his race engineer: “I could have fucking killed them, mate!” The FIA issued a statement confirming the matter would be investigated.

“Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner,” said the FIA’s statement. “On lap three, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to enter the track and recover the debris once all cars had passed turn one.
“As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded, and a double yellow flag was shown in that area. We are still investigating what occurred after that point.
“We would like to underline our respect and appreciation for the local ASN [sporting club], OMDAI, as well as the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez and their marshals, who are volunteers and play a vital role in the safe and successful running of our sport. Their professionalism and dedication are invaluable to every event we stage.”
