Two rookie drivers will start a grand prix ahead of their team mates for the first time this weekend.

Jack Doohan and Andrea Kimi Antonelli had each out-qualified their team mates for a sprint race, but now they’ve done it for the main event too.

Change from practice to qualifying

Doohan’s team mate Pierre Gasly tried some changes to his car between the sprint race and qualifying but was unhappy with how it felt in Q1. Although he encountered some traffic on his final lap he admitted “my runs were clean, but we just did not manage to be fast enough.”

Compared to practice, Alpine gained more lap time in qualifying than any other team besides Haas, who managed to get Esteban Ocon into Q3.

Gaps between team mates

There was little more than a tenth of a second between half the pairs of team mates on the grid. Ironically, while Lewis Hamilton dropped out in Q2, he was actually much closer in performance to team mate Charles Leclerc than usual, but Ferrari were generally less competitive.

Doohan beat his team mate more comfortably than most drivers. Oliver Bearman’s qualifying performances continue to fluctuate and he was well off Ocon this time.

Yuki Tsunoda may have been further off his team mate than any other driver, but he was over half a second closer to Max Verstappen than in the sprint race qualifying session.

Team mate battles sequences

Doohan went into the Miami Grand Prix facing fresh questions over his future following a remark by one of Franco Colapinto’s sponsors.

He was frustrated to drop out of the first round of qualifying for the sprint race after problems getting out of his pit box. However qualifying for the grand prix went better, and for the first time he claimed a place ahead of team mate Gasly on the grid for Sunday’s race.

Doohan had been out-qualified by Gasly in all six of their prior grand prix appearances as team mates since the rookie made his debut in the final race of last season. Antonelli had also never beaten George Russell in a grand prix qualifying session, though he took a superb pole position for the sprint race this weekend.

As both ended their team mates’ winning streaks, it leaves two drivers well ahead of the rest by this measure. Fernando Alonso has out-qualified Lance Stroll for 18 grands prix in a row. Verstappen hasn’t been beaten by a team mate for 13 races, though in that time his team mates have included Sergio Perez, Liam Lawson and now Tsunoda.

Q1 and Q3

For the first time since the season-opener in Australia, Gabriel Bortoleto got his Sauber into Q2. That leaves his team mate Nico Hulkenberg and Stroll as the drivers with the longest runs of Q1 eliminations.
