“Don’t shout at me, okay?” Hadjar’s race was one aggravation after another

“Don’t shout at me, okay?” Hadjar’s race was one aggravation after another

Isack Hadjar was anxious to avoid being ‘undercut’ by a rival when he pitted during the Brazilian Grand Prix.

So he was not at all impressed when Oliver Bearman did exactly that when they pitted for the first time.

His frustrations grew as he lost time behind Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon – and was never shy about letting his team know what he thought about the situation over the 71-lap race.

Having lost another position to his team mate, Hadjar was fortunate to avoid a disastrous end to his race when he made contact with Liam Lawson on the final lap. But his overriding concern remained how he lost a position to Bearman in the first place.

Messages from Hadjar’s radio in the Brazilian GP

“No need to be ironic”
“I’m happy to manage tyres if the car behind does”
“We are reviewing what’s happened”
“What a f***ing noob”
“Look after me better than at Austin, please”
“What a pain in the ass”
“Don’t shout at me, okay?”
“The first stint we were sleeping”

“No need to be ironic”

Even as early as lap two, when the Safety Car was deployed in reaction to Gabriel Bortoleto’s crash, Hadjar was agitating for an early pit stop to avoid coming under threat from those behind him. But race engineer Pierre Hamelin pointed out it would be an unwise call as he would fall behind many other cars.

Lap: 2/71 HAD: 1’53.008
Hadjar Why don’t we do our stop now?
Hamelin Multi B turn 10 and turn 14 and the straight
Hadjar Yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you copy that?
Hamelin I copied. Do you want to lose that many positions? We’re in a good place, mate.
Hadjar Hey, I’m just asking, no need to be ironic, okay?
Hamelin Okay, sorry.
Hamelin So, let’s leave it to us and focus on your tyres. Brakes are good.
Lap: 3/71 HAD: 1’49.148
Hadjar Yeah, debris down the main straight, very random.
Hamelin Copy.

“I’m happy to manage tyres if the car behind does”

Lawson moved up to sixth place behind Hadjar at the start, with Bearman’s Haas chasing them. When Hamelin told his driver to manage his pace, Hadjar said he would only do so if he had a guarantee Lawson would do the same. “He will,” Hamelin assured him.

Hamelin Okay Isack let me know when is a good time to talk to you about the situation.
Hadjar Whenever you want.
Hamelin Okay, so we’ve got both Aston, Ocon on hard. Good plan will be to manage tyre and be able to clear those slower cars.
Hadjar I’m happy to manage tyres if the car behind does as well.
Hamelin Loud and clear.
Lap: 5/71 HAD: 1’17.055
Hamelin Answer is, he will.
Hamelin Racing from the line, we do the first lap and then head down for tyre management.

Lap: 8/71 HAD: 1’41.363

Hamelin Russell passes Hadjar approaching turn four
Okay Isack back into rhythm, consider back to EB9 one step more. Now we use the free air, we look after our tyres.

“We are reviewing what’s happened”

Bearman appeared in Hadjar’s mirrors when he passed Lawson on lap 13. Haas then brought him into the pits before Hadjar, who fell behind when he made his pit stop the next time.

Hadjar was deeply unimpressed, but Racing Bulls were in a more difficult position than he likely realised. Haas were able to use Esteban Ocon to their advantage, as he was running far enough behind that Hadjar would leave the pits close behind him. They brought Bearman in knowing he would come out behind his team mate, and told Ocon to make way immediately.

Ocon complied, putting Bearman in position to get ahead of Hadjar. Hamelin later pointed out to Hadjar he also lost time through the pit exit at this point.

Hamelin Consider diff entry one step up. The rear is starting to go a little bit.
Hadjar Mate this sucks, it’s so bad.

Hamelin Loud and clear, Isack. We are reviewing what’s happened. Loud and clear. Head down now, we have to do the best with this. We are faster than Ocon. Much faster. Let’s get him quickly.

“What a f***ing noob”

Hadjar quickly passed Ocon heading into turn one as the Haas driver covered the inside line.

Lap: 25/71 HAD: 1’14.773
Hamelin Manage your battery, Isack, that cost you.

“Look after me better than at Austin, please”

Hadjar told Racing Bulls not to let him get ‘undercut’ again

Under pressure from Pierre Gasly behind, Hadjar grew concerned Racing Bulls would allow another car to ‘undercut’ him. He reminded the team how badly things had gone for them at the United States Grand Prix, where he ran a long first stint hoping for a Safety Car deployment, to no avail.

Hadjar Mate, DRS train ahead, it’s going to be tough.
Hamelin Let’s try it, we are faster, let’s try.

Lap: 31/71 HAD: 1’14.998
Hadjar How is he able to stay that close! [Unclear]
Hamelin Copy Isack, remember what we discussed. We keep him at bay, we just focus on the pace on clean laps. We just keep him at bay and we focus on the [unclear].
Lap: 36/71 HAD: 1’14.905
Hamelin Isack, heads up, behind Gasly on the mediums, we have Max coming on a new medium.
Hadjar I’m not going to wait for the cars behind us to undercut me. What do we do?
Lap: 37/71 HAD: 1’18.786
Hamelin We are looking after you, don’t worry.
Hadjar Okay, then look after me better than at Austin, please.
Hamelin Copy that.
Hamelin Box box, box box. Careful pit exit we lost seven tenths last time. Take a bit more margin.

“What a pain in the ass”

Hadjar spent over a lap trying to pick his way past his former team mate Yuki Tsunoda in the Red Bull. He lost more time dealing with Franco Colapinto.

Hadjar Car is so bad in turn 10, mate.
Hamelin Try to peak less the brakes in turn 10 to reduce rear locking. You can consider a small lift-off there.

“Don’t shout at me, okay?”

The Aston Martin pair co-operated to delay Hadjar

Racing Bulls brought Hadjar in before Gasly could undercut him, but he lost positions to his team mate and Nico Hulkenberg, who were both one-stopping. He also had to deal with Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin, who briefly had the benefit of running within DRS range of his team mate.

“The first stint we were sleeping”

Hadjar’s last-lap attack on Lawson almost ended in disaster

Hadjar was able to go on the attack over the final laps. He passed Hulkenberg on lap 69, then drew within range of Lawson. He made a bold attempt to pass around the outside on the final lap, but swung in sharply and the pair made contact.

Luckily for the team both were able to continue. Hadjar finished eighth behind his team mate but his main concern remained why he had fallen behind Bearman many laps earlier.

Hamelin Yeah, let’s keep working as a team, obviously.
Hadjar I think we did the right choices, it’s just the first stint we were sleeping, sleeping. Then the rest was good.
Hamelin Yeah, I can explain later, there was a mistake in our tools.
Hadjar Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mistakes on tools. Nice. Anyway.
Hamelin Yep. No excuse. I agree.
Hamelin Please remember, full car switch off, P zero.
