In a move to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the Delhi government has proposed a fresh set of incentives, including a 100 per cent waiver of road tax and registration fees for electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakh, under its draft Electric Vehicle Policy 2026-2030, released on Saturday.According to PTI, the draft policy also proposes a 50 per cent reduction in road tax and registration charges for strong hybrid EVs.
According to the draft, the benefits will be available for eligible electric cars registered in the capital till March 31, 2030. However, higher-priced electric cars, which are above ₹30 lakh, will not qualify for any such exemptions.
In a significant shift for the last-mile mobility segment, the government has proposed that from January 1, 2027, all new registrations of three-wheelers in Delhi will be limited to electric models only.
“The Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026-2030 builds on this momentum to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, improve air quality and create a supportive ecosystem for electric mobility. The policy will be applicable from the date of the notification,” the draft stated.
The government has opened the draft for public consultation, inviting feedback and suggestions over the next 30 days.
Launched in August 2020 as one of the key initiatives of the previous AAP government, the EV policy aims to tackle vehicular pollution and promote the adoption of EVs in Delhi. The policy’s initial three-year term ended in August 2023, and the government has been extending it ever since.
