Oliver Bearman showed he is making progress at an “amazing” rate after claiming a surprise fourth place in Mexico, said Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu.
The result equalled the team’s best ever result, which was previously achieved by Romain Grosjean in the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix.
Bearman made his debut as a rookie in a practice session with Haas at the Mexican Grand Prix two years ago. He became a full-time driver this year and Komatsu said his “rate of growing is amazing” in his first season.
“We always saw huge talent and every single time we just are learning and we are improving and then since Singapore he’s been putting weekends together,” Komatsu told the official Formula 1 channel.
“In Austin, there was a couple of things in the sprint [race] and [grand prix] but other than that he was mega. And here, what can I say? He hasn’t put a foot wrong, has he? It’s just amazing.”
Bearman gained several places at the start then capitalised on an incident ahead of him to pass Max Verstappen and George Russell. He lost a position to Verstappen by making a second pit stop but out-ran Oscar Piastri and the two Mercedes drivers to finish fourth.
Komatsu said they couldn’t afford to risk leaving Bearman on a one-stop. “In the second stint, when we were ahead of those Mercedes guys, of course at that point we were trying to go for one-stop, managing tyres to make sure we got the tyres at the end,” he explained. “That was still our baseline.

“Then Max [pitted] and when those guys started converting into two stops, for me it was about risk management. For what we are fighting for, we really needed to secure P4, and then, that was the best chance to cover and then go for it.
“Then again, after that pit stop, we were fighting against Russell and Piastri. Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, what a privilege to fight those guys. The whole team’s done a fantastic job.”
“It was just a big team effort,” he added. “We’ve always been there this season, fighting, and then never had a big result.
“But what a team effort. Ollie drove fantastic. The tyre guys gave us completely the right information, the strategy guys did an amazing job, race engineer, performance engineer, everyone giving the right information to the driver, communicating.”
Esteban Ocon completed a great day for Haas by finishing ninth. “Finally, finally we managed to get a big result, and then to get both drivers in the points is just amazing,” said Komatsu.
