BAJA SAEINDIA 2026 will conclude with a four-hour endurance race for electric vehicles, followed by the valedictory function. Only teams that clear safety scrutiny, technical inspection and the brake test—requiring all wheels to lock from a speed of 40 km/hr—will be allowed to participate in the dynamic events.Teams that qualify will compete in acceleration, suspension, traction, manoeuvrability, and sledge-pull tests. In addition to mechanical and electrical inspections, vehicles will also be required to pass a “go–no–go” rainwater storm test, similar to a water wading test, in line with Automotive Industry Standards.

Focus on standards and drivetrain strategies

Organisers said the 2026 rulebook is designed to familiarise students with applicable automotive standards, requirements and certification test procedures. According to the organising committee, this approach has helped prepare students for industry roles over the past 18 years, with many former participants now working in leadership positions at automotive original equipment manufacturers. This year, vehicles with two drivetrain systems—60 V and 72 V—will compete on the same tracks. Teams have been allowed flexibility in choosing gear ratios, tyre sizes and battery capacities, leading to differences in onboard energy and vehicle weight that will influence endurance performance and range on a single charge.

Battery swapping adds complexity

All teams will be permitted to use an additional battery pack for swapping during the endurance event, following procedures outlined in the rulebook. Teams are free to select battery capacity and must design their own battery-retaining brackets, with an emphasis on safe, quick replacement.Battery swapping was introduced in eBAJA SAEINDIA in 2021 and has since become part of the endurance strategy. Organisers said the combination of mixed drivetrain systems, open battery capacity choices and time-bound battery swaps is expected to influence race strategies and outcomes across both dynamic and endurance events.
