Ather Energy, an Indian electric two-wheeler manufacturer, has partnered with ChargeMOD, a Kerala-based charge point operator, to expand charging access for EVs equipped with the LECCS connector. This collaboration adds 121 new charging locations in Kerala, boosting Ather’s existing network of 291 fast chargers in the state as of December 31, 2024. As a market leader in Kerala, Ather aims to simplify EV ownership and enhance accessibility through this partnership, having sold over 10,000 units in the region between August 2024 and January 2025.

Promoting Interoperability Among EVs

This partnership builds upon the Ather Grid, India’s first two-wheeler fast-charging network, launched in 2018. ChargeMOD, which operates over 3,500 charging stations across India, Nepal, and Abu Dhabi, will collaborate with Ather to promote the use of the standardized LECCS connector. This connector ensures interoperability, allowing multiple EV brands to access the same charging infrastructure.

Between April and December of FY2025, Ather added 799 fast chargers to its network. The company’s strategy focuses on partnering with charge point operators (CPOs) to accelerate the growth of charging infrastructure. Previous collaborations include Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Sangeetha Mobiles Private Limited, and Café Coffee Day Global Limited.

Significance of the partnership

The partnership with ChargeMOD further reinforces Ather’s commitment to developing a robust EV charging ecosystem, especially in Kerala, where it has already established strong market leadership.

“Since the very beginning, we have focused on establishing a nationwide charging network and have believed that OEMs should collaborate with CPOs to expand the charging network in the country,” said Ravneet Singh Phokela, Chief Business Officer at Ather Energy.

The LECCS (Light Electric Combined Charging System) standard, published as an Indian standard in August 2023, ensures seamless compatibility across EVs equipped with this connector. This move aligns with the broader industry goal of simplifying charging infrastructure and enhancing the overall EV experience in India.

The adoption of the LECCS connector, designated as the standard Type 7 connector, facilitates interoperability and supports the collaborative growth of India’s EV charging ecosystem.

“Our partnership with Ather Energy is a testament to our shared vision of creating a robust EV charging infrastructure,” said Visakh Raj, Founder of ChargeMOD. “By combining our extensive network with Ather’s advanced charging technology on LECCS, we are setting a new standard for light electric vehicle infrastructure in the country.”
