First practice is done and last week’s winner is still leading the way. Here’s our report.
Alonso complaining about his engine performance, saying he’s losing two tenths of a second on the straight.
Hirakawa: “I had a bit of bouncing or bottoming on the entry to nine which was not nice.”
Russell still hasn’t run the soft yet and his fallen to 11th. He reports his front-left isn’t looking good.
Oliver Bearman moves into the ‘best of the rest’ spot, 0.879s off Norris.
Hamilton beats his team mate but is just a hundredth of a second shy of Verstappen, also on softs. Norris has them all beat though with a 1’13.718, fastest of all in each sector and over three tenths of a second ahead at the line.
Charles Leclerc switches to softs and lops half a second off Russell’s time. Verstappen immediately beats that by 0.153s, also on the softs.
George Russell has switched to a set of mediums and he goes quickest now with a 1’14.751. Nico Hulkenberg has switched to softs and goes a tenth of a second off the Mercedes.
Norris pitted without improving his time and he remains top. Franco Colapinto, one of the few drivers running the medium rubber at the moment, is also the only driver with a fresh power unit for this weekend’s race.
Norris lowers the best to a 1’15.259.
Lawson is mystified at being held up by Charles Leclerc at turn one. The Racing Bulls driver has a pitot tube array on his car.
Is Max Verstappen going to follow his usual routine of looking competitive in first practice, nowhere in second practice and bang on the pace in third practice? He goes third with his first representative run.
Fernando Alonso sets a new benchmark with a 1’15.480 putting him 0.153s ahead of Norris.
Not a great start for Hirakawa who’s gone off at turn 10. He ploughs through the gravel and rejoins.
Most drivers favouring the hard tyres to begin with. Lando Norris goes top with a 1’16.095, just nine thousandths of a second faster than his team mate.
Two rookie drivers will take part in this session. Victor Martins is making his debut for Williams and Ryo Hirakawa will make his third appearance of the season, and his second at Haas.
