As it happened: 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix second practice

This session has finished. No further updates will be posted.

That is day one of practice done – here’s the report and times from the second session, more coming up soon on RaceFans.

The chequered flag has dropped and it’s a McLaren one-two ahead of Verstappen in second practice.

Actually it looks like everyone who left their garage has got out, though not everyone tried to join in. Isack Hadjar and Andrea Kimi Antonelli are still in the pits.

The session has been restarted with one minute to run, so some of the drivers may not be able to join the track before the pit exit light goes red again.

Tsunoda hit the barrier on the inside of the corner which sent him to the outside. Norris made a similar mistake during last year’s qualifying session.

Red flag: Tsunoda has crashed at the final corner. He says he’s okay.

With a quarter of an hour to go in the session drivers are either running the soft or medium rubber, with the exception of Albon who is on the hards.

Leclerc begins a lap on his now quite tired soft rubber. He goes four, four tenths of a second off Norris, but there’s surely more in that Ferrari.

Leclerc pits without setting a representative time on his soft tyres.

Norris dodges past traffic at turn 13 and posts the fastest first sector time. He sets a 1’28.340 to take over at the top by nine hundredths of a second.

Still no time from Leclerc but he’s just begun a lap now.

Piastri beats Verstappen’s time by a tenth of a second to go top.

Max Verstappen is flying, lighting up the first two sectors with the best times yet. He crosses the line and sets a 1’28.547 to head the times by almost four tenths of a second.

Carlos Sainz Jnr lowers the best time to a 1’28.942 so he is 0.031s ahead of Russell.

Leclerc joins the track on a set of softs – does he have anything for the McLarens on the tyres they will qualify on? Interesting lap coming up.

George Russell does a 1’28.973 on softs, putting him 0.029s ahead of Leclerc on mediums.

Liam Lawson is the first driver onto softs and posts a 1’29.522 to go fourth behind Leclerc and the McLarens. Isack Hadjar is in the pits in the other Racing Bulls.

Charles Leclerc takes over at the top with a 1’29.002 and is now 0.138s ahead of Piastri.

Gasly is down in 10th. “I can’t brake. Check the brakes.”

Piastri lowers the best time to a 1’29.140 which puts him 0.132s ahead of Norris.

Piastri jumps up to second place, just a thousandth of a second slower than his team mate.

Lewis Hamilton gets in Alexander Albon’s way and the Williams driver swerves to avoid him. “Dangerous,” he remarks. The stewards have noted the incident.

Lance Stroll has spun at turn one. He comes to a stop in the run-off area and gets going again.

Oscar Piastri was held up by Nico Hulkenberg as he tried to leave the pits, the Sauber driver got too close to the pit wall.

Lando Norris hits the top of the times with a 1’29.272 putting him 0.624s ahead of Max Verstappen.

Max Verstappen puts up a 1’29.896 to go quickest on mediums. Most drivers are on that rubber, though Albon is on hards. Pierre Gasly, who set the pace in the first session, goes second, four tenths of a second behind.

The session begins and 19 cars head out right away – all bar the unfortunate Bortoleto.

Bad news for Gabriel Bortoleto: Sauber discovered a fuel leak on his car after first practice. He will not take part in the second practice session as they are investigating the cause.

Second practice for the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is coming up next.
