Here’s our report on the Italian Grand Prix and the updated championship standings.
Verstappen wins the Italian Grand Prix!
Antonelli gets a five-second time penalty for driving erratically – he may fall out of the points.
L49 McLaren tell Piastri to let Norris through, and he does. But he’s within DRS range with four laps to go.
Piastri passes Norris! McLaren have swapped their drivers around through their pit stops. It doesn’t look intentional – Norris’s front-left tyre change was slow.
Norris pits but it’s a very slow stop and he’s surely going to fall behind Piastri.
L45 McLaren bring Piastri in first after reassuring Norris they won’t allow them to undercut their driver.
The stewards are investigating the incident between Sainz and Bearman and have noted another between Albon and Antonelli.
Sainz and Bearman tangle at the Roggia. Both manage to get going again which will be a huge relief for Red Bull as a Safety Car there would have been a disaster for Verstappen.
Verstappen took well over a second out of Norris on that lap on his new hards compared to Norris’s very old mediums.
Antonelli passes Gasly – both are one track limits strike away from a penalty, so they needed to keep that clean, and they did.
L38 Norris and Piastri do not pit – another sign McLaren are thinking softs (and hoping for a Safety Car).
L37 Red Bull pit Verstappen from the lead and put him on a set of hards. He had two fresh sets available.
Sainz has been reprimanded for his error in the run-off at the Roggia.
L36 Verstappen’s lead is slipping, it’s down to 5.3s now.
L34 Leclerc locks up as he comes into the pits. His stop is rapid and he rejoins in sixth behind Albon.
L30 Norris is starting to edge back towards Verstappen, he gets the gap down to under six seconds.
Tsunoda and Lawson make contact at the Roggia. Both cut the corner, then Lawson appeared to let Tsunoda by.
L28 Mercedes may be about to trigger the front runners’ pit stops as they bring Russell in.
McLaren ask Piastri if he can extend his first stint by 15 laps. Are they thinking of softs for the end of the race?
Sainz under investigation for rejoining the track incorrectly. Unlike his penalty a week ago, that looks like a slam-dunk call.
Alonso has made it into the pits.
L25 Alonso slow on the straight approaching Parabolica. Meanwhile Albon passes Sainz, that may be under team orders.
L23 Bortoleto passes Lawson.
L22 Verstappen now almost six seconds ahead ahead of Norris.
That was great work by Alonso to get very close to Bortoleto as they brakes for the pit lane speed limiter line.
L21 Bortoleto and Alonso put together but Sauber’s stop isn’t quick enough and it drops their driver behind the Aston Martin. Making matters worse, he also rejoins behind Lawson.
L20 Red Bull’s mechanics almost drop Tsunoda’s tyres as they hurry to bring him in in reaction to Bearman. The Haas driver rejoined behind Lawson. Tsunoda came out ahead of Bearman but is immediately passed by him.
L19 Bearman pits from 11th and switches to hards.
Sainz went off at Roggia, ignored the correct rejoin route and is now under investigation.
L18 A DRS train formed behind Bortoleto, but Tsunoda dropped too far back from Alonso and Antonelli punished him for it, passing him for ninth place.
Sauber confirm Hulkenberg retired with a hydraulic problem.
L15 Verstappen now 4.2s ahead and showing no sign of falling back towards the McLarens behind him.
Lawson made an early pit stop to switch to hards.
L11 Verstappen’s lead is up to 3.4 seconds over Norris. Piastri is now 4.8s behind.
Ocon has a five-second time penalty for forcing Stroll off at the Roggia.
Norris isn’t able to keep up with Verstappen who’s now two seconds ahead of him. Piastri is 3.7s behind his team mate and hasn’t quite shaken Leclerc out of DRS range yet.
L7 Hamilton continues his progress, passing Bortoleto for six with DRS.
L6 Piastri retakes Leclerc for third.
L5 Hamilton uses DRS to pass Alonso for seventh.
L4 Verstappen passes Norris with DRS to retake the lead.
Hamilton has moved up to eighth, Antonelli has slipped back to 10th.
L3 Leclerc defends hard from Piastri. Verstappen is using DRS to close on Norris. Behind them Bortoleto in the sole remaining Sauber attacks Russell for fifth place.
L2 Verstappen lets Norris by into the lead and Leclerc re-passes Piastri for second at Rettifilo.
Norris: “What is this idiot doing? He puts me on the grass and then he just cuts the corner.”
The Italian Grand Prix is go! Norris drives onto the grass, then Verstappen goes off at the Roggia to keep the McLaren behind. Leclerc is briefly up to third but Piastri puts a brilliant and incredibly important pass on the outside of Lesmo 1 to take the lead.
The cars are forming up on the grid ready for the start of the Italian Grand Prix, led by Verstappen.
Bad news for Sauber – they’ve called Nico Hulkenberg in to retire.
The top 13 starters are all on mediums. Behind them Albon, Ocon and Stroll are on hards, as are pit-lane starters Hadjar and Gasly. The exceptions among the back seven are Colapinto on mediums and Lawson, the only starter on softs.
There’s a potential problem for Aston Martin as both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are under investigation for failing to follow the race director’s event notes regarding practice starts. These are quite specific and basically require drivers who are performing practice starts to leave room for other cars who are not. They will be investigated after the race. Expect reprimands at most rather than a sporting penalty.
The drivers are heading out on their reconnaissance laps – which is where Hamilton got himself in trouble a year ago.
The FIA has confirmed the final starting grid for the Italian Grand Prix.
The FIA confirms McLaren replaced the throttle assembly on Norris’s car after qualifying.

Although Max Verstappen hasn’t won from his last three pole positions – at Silverstone (fifth), Miami (fourth) and Jeddah (second) – he has a great opportunity today. Passing is tricky at Monza, the race is usually a straightforward one-stop strategy and the two McLaren drivers immediately behind him will have to deal with him carefully as they’re also in the thick of a championship fight. Lando Norris lost 25 points to Oscar Piastri at the last round and can’t afford a no-score in a collision with Verstappen.
Charles Leclerc won from fourth on the grid last year and starts there again this year. Ferrari still haven’t won a race all season.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli has qualified better for his home race in sixth. He shares the third row with team mate George Russell who was frustrated to miss the chance to use the medium compound in Q3 which he thinks could have got him a better grid spot.
Gabriel Bortoleto produced another fine qualifying performance for Sauber and will start from seventh place with a great chance to add to his points haul. Sauber have aggressively trimmed back their downforce levels and were significantly quicker than their rivals on the straights yesterday which could make him hard to pass.
Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth for his first Italian Grand Prix as a Ferrari driver but will start 10th due to his grid penalty for failing to slow sufficiently for yellow flags during a reconnaissance lap at the last event.
We’ve had two changes from the grid since the end of yesterday’s qualifying session. Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly, who were both eliminated in Q1, have taken fresh power units and will start the race from the pit lane.
