As it happened: 2025 British Grand Prix

This session has finished. No further updates will be posted.

That concludes our live coverage of the British Grand Prix. Find our report here.

Norris wins the British Grand Prix! It’s a one-two for McLaren as Piastri takes second place.

Piastri is lobbying McLaren to swap the positions of their cars around. He also goes off at Becketts.

L44 Norris pits and takes the lead of the British Grand Prix.

The Haas drivers have collided! Bearman and Ocon tangle at Brooklands.

Piastri pits, serves his penalty and goes. Hulkenberg has been in too. Out on the track Verstappen goes off at Farm.

Verstappen also came in but it wasn’t a quick tyre change. Stroll, Gasly, Sainz, Bearman and Tsunoda also come in.

L42 Hamilton pits – he’s gone for softs with 15 laps to go.

No investigation for Leclerc.

The stewards have noted Leclerc for a rather physical pass on Leclerc at The Loop.

Russell pits for hards and spins off at Becketts. He rejoins.

Hamilton just said the track won’t be ready for slicks for 10 laps – and Alonso pits for them! He goes on to mediums.

L37 Piastri’s lead is only two seconds which isn’t enough to hold on to his win with his 10-second time penalty. Hulkenberg is third but Hamilton is bearing down on him. Stroll is being caught by Gasly and Russell – and Alonso and Verstappen for that matter.

As the race leader has a 10-second time penalty, if the race ends under a Safety Car, it’s worth recalling this precedent from Formula 2 last year.

Nico Hulkenberg has passed Lance Stroll and is on course for a podium position. He’s never had one in F1 before – but Lewis Hamilton may yet take it off him as he’s passed the Aston Martin a well.

L30 Next time by Hamilton works a way past Gasly at Club. He’s up to fifth.

Hamilton is back ahead of Russell having lost a place to him earlier by going off at Copse. He’s now fighting Gasly, who forces him wide at the exit of Stowe.

L27 Verstappen is still stuck in 10th place. “I can’t even stay with them, so slow.”

Tsunoda cops a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Bearman.

Tsunoda under investigation over Bearman.

Piastri has been given a 10-second time penalty for that incident under the Safety Car.

Piastri is under investigation for a Safety Car infringement.

Verstappen complained Piastri braked too sharply on the Hangar straight before the restart.

Bearman spins at the exit of Luffield and drops back. He may have had held in that from Tsunoda.

L21 The race restarts and Verstappen spins! He’s down to 10th. Norris is up to second and Stroll is in a podium place in third.

Lap 21 and Antonelli makes his third pit stop of the day.

Hadjar went straight up the back of Antonelli at Copse. Remarkably the Mercedes driver has kept going.

The Safety Car is back out as Hadjar has crashed heavily. Both Racing Bulls out. He says he’s okay.

L17 Piastri leads Verstappen and Norris at the restart.

L16 The Safety Car is finally coming in.

Stroll is up in fourth and Alonso, 10th, is unhappy with his strategy. “Crazy how you never get it right with me.”

Leclerc went off in Becketts, he says he couldn’t see due to water in his visor.

Safety Car deployed.

Stroll is now up to fourth ahead of Hulkenberg, Gasly, Ocon, Hamilton, Russell and Alonso.

Albon pits for fresh intermediates. Piastri has a 10 second lead as Verstappen’s lap times have dropped a lot more on the wetter track. Norris is pursuing him hard again.

The McLaren drivers and Verstappen pit but Norris’s stop is slow and it drops him straight back behind the Red Bull.

L11 Verstappen backs off so much at Copse that Norris almost goes off the back of him. Then he goes off at Becketts and Norris is by into second.

The slick shod runners have come in: Russell, Leclerc, Hadjar and Bearman. Also Stroll and Hulkenberg.

L10 Rain drops fall and Antonelli is back in for intermediates already. Norris is now closing on Verstappen for second.

Leclerc easily passes Antonelli with DRS.

Russell does the fastest lap, almost three seconds faster than the duelling leaders, but he’s 27 seconds behind and more rain is coming.

Piastri tests Verstappen’s defences in the high-speed corners. Verstappen has another slide at Becketts and Piastri takes the lead off him.

L8 DRS enabled. Verstappen goes deep at Village.

L7 The second VSC ends. Piastri chases Verstappen into Maggotts.

L6 Russell is the leading slick runner having been allowed past Antonelli.

L5 VSC again. Bortoleto is climbing out.

The Sauber driver has now stopped at the exit of Copse. Verstappen gets very sideways coming out of Becketts. It’s still quite wet at the end of the lap.

Bortoleto managed to get going again and the race is back under green. He spun off at Farm and damaged his rear wing on the barrier. Debris is falling off it so Sauber may be in trouble here.

The VSC ends. Hamilton is told “rain expected in 10 laps.” Bortoleto has crashed.

Russell, Leclerc, Hadjar, Bortoleto and Bearman all pitted for slicks before the start. Antonelli has also switched to them under the Virtual Safety Car. Mercedes have gone for hards, as has Bearman, the rest mediums.

Lawson was hit by Ocon: “Who the hell was that?”

Virtual Safety Car deployed: Lawson has stopped off the Wellington straight with damage.

The British Grand Prix is go! Verstappen holds off a fast-starting Piastri as Hamilton attacks Norris.

Russell and Leclerc pit for slicks. The drivers are forming up on the grid ready for the start.

Standing start confirmed.

The drivers head off on their formation lap. A standing start is expected but hasn’t been confirmed yet.

All drivers will start the race on intermediate tyres.

The air temperature is 18C, track temperature 26C ahead of the start.

The formation lap will take place behind the Safety Car.

McLaren are swapping Norris’s tyres – they’re covered so can’t see what he had on or what he’s got now.

With just over 20 minutes to go until the race start the rain has passed over the circuit. There may be some more later from the north-west, in which case it is likely to hit the Woodcote/Luffield area first.

The rain is still falling but it’s not too heavy and probably isn’t enough to tip the track to ‘full wet’ conditions.

The rain has started. Teams putting up their canopies on the grid.

Norris heads out on intermediates.

There’s 40 minutes to the start of the formation lap, drivers are heading out to perform reconnaissance laps.

The skies have darkened at Silverstone as the drivers prepare to leave the garages to do their reconnaissance laps.

With just under an hour to go to the start of the grand prix, the track is damp but drying. However a further band of rain looks set to hit between now and the start of the formation lap.

McLaren repaired a few parts of Piastri’s floor after he clattered a kerb on his first flying lap in Q3: “Floor assembly, forward floor fixings and left-hand front trackrod to brake duct bracket.”

For all the key details on tactics for this race check out the strategy briefing.

Pirelli has brought tyres which are one step softer than last year. However some teams may still try to do a one-stop strategy. This brings a risk, as Mario Isola explained: “One stop – medium [then] hard – is probably a choice for some teams,” he said. “The problem on this choice is that we know that the wear life for the front tyres is very, very marginal. So it is at the limit, especially if tomorrow is slightly cooler and they have a bit more abrasion or right graining. Higher graining compared to what we have seen yesterday accelerates the wear and the situation. They have to pay attention on not running on a tyre with 100% wear.”

Franco Colapinto, who spun out during Q1 yesterday, will start from the pit lane after Alpine changed power unit parts on his car.

Ferrari looked very quick going into qualifying and in Q2 but faded in the top 10 shoot-out. They’ve claimed the third row of the grid, but are often stronger over a race stint than they are in qualifying, so they may well be a threat.

Lando Norris will start from third place alongside George Russell. Mercedes’ pace has been something of a mystery this weekend: they’ve tended to be more competitive in the cooler conditions but Russell didn’t come good until the end of qualifying yesterday.

Max Verstappen has taken pole position for the fourth time this year, giving him a great opportunity to gain on championship leader Oscar Piastri, who will start alongside him.

We’re one hour away from the start of the 2025 British Grand Prix.
