As it happened: 2025 British Grand Prix first practice

This session has finished. No further updates will be posted.

Last year’s British Grand Prix winner is fastest as practice begins at Silverstone. Here’s the report.

FP1 has finished and Lewis Hamilton Ferrari is fastest. Report to follow.

“His inside shoulders look far cleaner than ours on the rear,” reports George Russell after being passed by Hamilton.

Leclerc oversteers wide in Club.

Another sign Ferrari are in good shape as Lewis Hamilton goes quickest with a 1’26.892. That puts him just 0.023 seconds ahead of Lando Norris.

Gabriel Bortoleto has a high-speed spin at the exit of Copse, just like Gasly did. That’s made a mess of his soft rubber but he also avoided crashing.

Russell has now beaten the McLaren drivers as well for second place.

Piastri chips a few hundredths off Norris but then Charles Leclerc beats that time by almost two tenths of a second.

Norris goes quickest of all on the softs but not by a huge margin, he’s a tenth of a second ahead of Hadjar.

Verstappen opts for the softs but doesn’t go fastest, he ends up a tenth of a second off Hadjar.

Lots of drivers have taken new power units for this weekend. The McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes, Aston Martin and Sauber drivers all have fresh motors. Oliver Bearman and Isack Hadjar also have new units for this weekend.

Isack Hadjar has gone quickest with a 1’37.502 on mediums, six-hundredths of a second ahead of Charles Leclerc. Liam Lawson backs his team mate up in third.

Pierre Gasly has a major moment at the exit of Copse, spinning on the inside of the corner. “Absolutely lost it” he admits. He did well not to hit anything, though.

The track is already up to 39C but Mercedes aren’t wilting in the heat yet, Russell regains the fastest time from Lando Norris by two-hundredths of a second. Andrea Kimi Antonello goes second.

Lewis Hamilton moves up to the to spot on a 1’28.380. Oscar Piastri is second and Max Verstappen goes third now.

Verstappen: “In medium speed the car has quite a bit of front. Maybe lock the diff a little bit.”

Most drivers starting off on the medium tyre compound. George Russell sets the best time to begin with on a 1’28.570.

The first practice session has begun at Silverstone.

Yuki Tsunoda looks like he needs all the practice he can get in the Red Bull but he won’t participate in this session as Arvid Lindblad will drive his car.

That will be particularly reassuring for the two novice drivers in action during this session. Paul Aron is part of Alpine’s roster of reserve drivers but they’ve loaned him to Sauber for this session. He’ll drive Nico Hulkenberg’s car as he also will at the Hungaroring in two rounds’ time.

The forecasts indicate we might see some rain later this weekend but conditions are warm and sunny at Silverstone for this opening hour of practice.

The first practice session for the 2025 British Grand Prix is coming up next.
