As it happened: 2025 Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying

This session has finished. No further updates will be posted.

Here’s the starting grid for the Brazilian Grand Prix and our report on a surprising session.

Antonelli jumps up to second with his last lap which leaves Leclerc third ahead of Piastri.

Norris pulls it out with his last lap and puts it on pole!

Russell goes fourth but Antonelli has been consistently quicker – he can only take fourth off his team mate, though. All that has left Norris down in 10th.

Piastri takes it off Leclerc by just two thousandths of a second but the Mercedes have been rapid.

Leclerc takes the top time with a 1’09.899. Norris fifth after a mistake on his lap.

Q3 begins and Bearman puts up a 1’09.977 which is down on his previous best times. Norris has had a poor first sector.

The stewards have noted a potential impeding incident involving Hamilton and Russell.

Q2 is over and the following drivers are eliminated: Fernando Alonso, Alexander Albon, Lewis Hamilton, Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz Jnr.

Hamilton’s out again in the second round, 13th place for him. Leclerc got up to fourth.

Norris goes fastest with his last run, 1’09.616. Piastri abandons his last run.

Currently in the drop zone: Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll, Charles Leclerc, Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jnr.

Russell splits the McLarens but again Antonelli beats him to go second behind his Formula 2 team mate from last year.

Bearman goes back to the top with a 1’09.755. That beats both the McLarens for now, Piastri eight hundredths off and Norris a similar gap further behind him.

Charles Leclerc goes fastest in the first corner but backs out after a huge slide at Descida do Lago.

Q1 is over and the following drivers are eliminated: Max Verstappen, Esteban Ocon, Franco Colapinto, Yuki Tsunoda and Gabriel Bortoleto.

Verstappen makes a slight improvement in the middle sector but he stays 16th and he’s out! An absolute shocker for Red Bull.

Verstappen begins his lap.

Sauber have not managed to get Gabriel Bortoleto’s car repaired in time for him to participate in Q1 so he is eliminated.

Norris produces three fastest sector times and lowers the best to a 1’09.656.

A shock from Red Bull as Verstappen fails to improve with a lap on a new set of soft tyres. He had a huge snap in the middle of the lap at Pinheirinho. He must improve on his final run which he’ll do after two preparation laps but he’ll have a lot of company on the track by then.

Verstappen has now fallen into the drop zone, along with his team mate Yuki Tsunoda.

Piastri gets a lap in on fresh tyres and goes second, a few hundredths off that remarkable time by Bearman. Then Alexander Albon claims third – the lap times are improving very quickly.

Then Oliver Bearman produces a real surprise: the Haas driver sets a 1’09.891 to head the times by three tenths of a second. A mega lap by him.

George Russell goes second with a 1’10.302 but Andrea Kimi Antonelli was faster than him in the first two sectors and takes over at the top of the times with a 1’10.192.

Piastri has pitted. He began the session on an old set of soft tyres and is down in 16th.

Lewis Hamilton prefers the softs and goes quickest with a 1’10.233.

Lando Norris puts up a 1’10.404 on softs. Charles Leclerc is running on mediums – he’s sixth as Max Verstappen goes fourth.

Oscar Piastri is back in his McLaren for the first time after that costly crash earlier today. He has a small lock-up at turn one and runs wide.

Q1 has begun. Williams send their drivers around for an installation lap then bring them back in.

The length of the delay has not been stated. The session was due to begin at 2pm local time, just under 10 minutes from now.

The start of qualifying is being delayed due to barrier repairs at turns 10 and 11.

Alpine have fitted an old power unit to Franco Colapinto’s car as part of the repair job following his crash in the sprint race.

Oliver Bearman has been given a time penalty and a penalty point on his licence for his clash with Liam Lawson in the sprint race.

Qualifying for the 2025 Brazilian Grand Prix is coming up next.
