As it happened: 2025 Belgian Grand Prix

This session has finished. No further updates will be posted.

That concludes our live coverage of the Belgian Grand Prix but there’s much more to come on RaceFans. Here’s the result and the report. Don’t forget to rate the race and pick your Driver of the Weekend.

Piastri wins the Belgian Grand Prix! It’s another one-two for McLaren as Norris takes second.

L43 Another mistake for Norris at La Source and his deficit to Piastri rises from three seconds to four.

Norris locked up and went wide at La Source and has lost almost a second to Piastri on this lap.

L34 Piastri – 7.1 – Norris

L33 Hulkenberg pits from 10th for another set of mediums, which looks risky given how hard drivers have found it to overtake. That promotes Gasly to 10th.

Norris went off at Pouhon – that will have got his attention. He’s now set the fastest lap which leaves him 8.2s behind Piastri.

L30 Alonso pits.

Bortoleto hasn’t been able to pass Lawson since Sauber swapped their drivers.

L28 Norris has dropped back further from Piastri, the gap is now nine seconds.

L27 Sainz heads for the pits again. Antonelli takes 14th off Alonso. Otherwise very static.

There are a few showers developing to the west of the track, nothing certain to hit just yet, but the strategists will be keeping an eye on them.

L22 – half distance. Norris has cut Piastri’s lead to just over eight seconds. Leclerc is another seven behind, with Verstappen and Russell behind him.

Hadjar has sunk to 19th after being passed by Stroll and Sainz.

L20 Sauber tell Hulkenberg to let Bortoleto through into ninth place. Antonelli takes 15th off Colapinto.

Everyone is now on medium compound slicks expected for Norris on hards in second place behind Piastri. Leclerc is third with Verstappen and Russell close behind. Albon is also within sight and he has Hamilton in his mirrors, who’s made up a lot of ground with that early switch to slicks.

L14 Norris and Tsunoda pit. Norris rejoins in second but Piastri has gained several seconds. Norris however has taken the hards in an attempt to run to the end – Piastri is on mediums.

Hulkenberg on slicks is 2.8 seconds faster in the middle sector than Norris on mediums.

L12 Piastri pits, Norris stays out and takes the lead, Leclerc and Verstappen come in too. Leclerc joins the pit queue very close to Albon. He stays ahead of Verstappen.

L11 Hamilton pits for slicks, he’s on mediums. On lap one Verstappen said he thought the track would only take five laps to dry out. Gasly, Hulkenberg and Alonso all pit too.

The Haas drivers have swapped positions, Bearman now ahead of Ocon, Hamilton pursuing them.

L9 Hamilton passes Gasly into Stavelot which is an unusual place to pass, he’s 13th now.

Piastri has a second over Norris, Leclerc has fallen four-and-a-half seconds behind now, Verstappen is breathing down his neck, Russell isn’t catching them.

Hamilton then takes Hulkenberg for 14th.

L8 Hamilton passes Gasly at Les Combes and is now 15th.

P7 Hamilton passes Sainz for 16th.

Hamilton passes Stroll for 17th.

L6 Russell passes Albon for fifth into Les Combes. His next target is Verstappen and it’s always fun when they go wheel-to-wheel.

Sainz is the only other driver who’s gained a place at the start, from Stroll.

Norris asks: “Why do I have no pack?” He may have a problem with his energy deployment.

Norris makes a mistake at La Source and Piastri immediately takes the lead off him at Les Combes.

The Belgian Grand Prix is finally underway. Norris leads Piastri, Leclerc and Verstappen.

The race will begin with a rolling start, the FIA has confirmed.

The Safety Car continues past again and the drivers begin their fourth lap of 44. No indication yet when the start will happen.

The Safety Car has continued for a third lap.

Verstappen predicts the track will be dry in five laps.

The cars have left the pits and are running under Safety Car conditions. This is officially lap one of the race.

The radar shows a substantial dry spell now which may persist but the conditions are changing a lot and it’s not impossible more rain could fall later on.

The race is due to restart in five minutes’ time starting with at least two laps behind the Safety Car.

The FIA say they expect the rain to stop at 4pm local time, after which they hope to start as soon as the standing water has been cleared.

Several drivers told their teams: “I can’t see anything” before the attempt to start the race was abandoned. More details here.

An unusual decision from the stewards: They are allowing drivers to drop up to 20 metres behind the car in front during Safety Car periods instead of the usual 10. They say this is being done due to the conditions.

We’re still awaiting word on when the race will start.

According to the FIA “most drivers have reported poor visibility during the formation lap, hence the red flag.”

The starting procedure has been suspended and the start red-flagged. A large band of rain is over the track at the moment which could last a while longer.

The drivers have begun the formation lap on a wet track with rain still falling.

All drivers are on intermediate tyres.

The formation lap will take place behind the Safety Car.

We’re 10 minutes away from the start of the race and so far there’s been no indication race control intends to delay proceedings. They have said “risk of rain for the race is “100%”.

Rain is falling heavily on the grid with a quarter of an hour to go until the planned start of the formation lap.

The radar indicates a powerful thunderstorm is going to hit the track fairly soon. However it should pass over so even if they aren’t able to start the race on time we shouldn’t be looking at a repeat of 2021.

Drivers are on their reconnaissance laps on a damp circuit. However big clouds are rolling in and a lot of rain is expected to hit the track soon.

We’ve had a few changes to the grid since qualifying yesterday: Carlos Sainz Jnr, Lewis Hamilton, Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Fernando Alonso will all start from the pits. More details here and updated grid here.

We’re one hour away from the start of the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix.
