New Delhi: While the city witnessed dense fog conditions on Monday, the air quality improved slightly, leading to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) revoking restrictions under GRAP-III, five days after it was implemented. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a possibility of light rain or drizzle up to Tuesday noon.

Dense fog was reported at Safdarjung, the city’s base station, with the lowest visibility of 50 metres from 5.30 am to 6.30 am, improving to 150 metres at 7 am. At Palam, the lowest visibility was 50 metres from 4.30 am to 5.30 am, which improved thereafter, becoming 100 metres at 6 am, said IMD. No flights were diverted or cancelled, but some were delayed during the early hours at Delhi airport, said an airport official.

“Under the influence of a Western Disturbance, light to moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over the western Himalayan region and light rainfall is likely over adjoining plains of northwest India during Feb 3-5,” said IMD in its bulletin. However, a Met official said, “No significant rainfall is expected in Delhi on Tuesday.”

The maximum temperature on Monday was recorded at 24.4 degrees Celsius – two degrees above normal for this period. The minimum temperature settled at 10.2 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal.

IMD has predicted that the maximum temperature is likely to dip to 20-22 degrees Celsius due to a cloudy sky on Tuesday. However, after the impact of the Western Disturbance is over, the maximum temperature is predicted to rise again, said IMD.

Meanwhile, the capital’s air quality improved from the ‘very poor’ to the ‘poor’ category due to consistent winds and a clear sky towards late Monday morning and afternoon. The AQI at 11 am was 304, which improved to 286 by 4 pm.

The air quality improved marginally in Noida but remained in the ‘moderate’ category on Monday at 140 – compared to 183 the day before. In Greater Noida, the air quality improved further into the ‘moderate’ category at at 162, down from ‘poor’ at 202 on Sunday.

Neighbouring Ghaziabad saw similar improvement in air quality but also remained ‘moderate’ on Monday, recording an AQI of 156 against 193 the day before.

“Owing to improvement in mixing height and ventilation coefficient and much favourable meteorological conditions for the dispersion of pollutants, the AQI of Delhi showed a significant improvement,” stated CAQM.

According to the air quality early warning system, “The air quality is likely to be in the “poor category from Feb 4 to Feb 6.”
