Lance Stroll has now gone a full calendar year without beating his team mate in qualifying for a grand prix. Here are the key stats from qualifying.
Change from practice to qualifying
The three teams whose qualifying pace was least obvious on Friday were Haas, Alpine and Red Bull. Pierre Gasly’s qualifying performance for Alpine is all the more remarkable considering they were slower in final practice than they had been the day before.
Gaps between team mates
Franco Colapinto arrived at Silverstone for the sixth race of what Alpine originally billed as a five-race trial in the seat originally occupied by Jack Doohan. His Q1 crash, which doomed him to elimination, obviously did him no favours.
After the Alpine drivers, the next widest gap between a pair of team mates was at Red Bull. However Yuki Tsunoda said a loss of power in Q2 contributed to his early exit while his team mate Max Verstappen went on to take pole position.
Team mate battles sequences
Verstappen has now out-qualified his team mates for the last 18 rounds in a row. Only one driver has a better record.
Fernando Alonso has now beaten Lance Stroll in qualifying sessions for the last 24 consecutive grands prix. That covers a full calendar year, back to Stroll’s last win in a full qualifying session at Silverstone last year. Stroll has come out ahead in a shorter sprint race qualifying session during this time, but qualifying sessions for the main event have all gone Alonso’s way since this time last year.
