More than 44,000 cases of unauthorised parking and more than 25,000 cases of over-speeding were registered in Gujarat in Jan, which was observed as National Road Safety Month and was marked by a number of awareness programmes on road safety.
An official statement said on Friday that a special drive was organised in all districts of Gujarat to prevent accidents, especially fatal accidents. As part of this drive, over 1 lakh handbills and pamphlets were distributed, and more than 97,000 citizens were given educational booklets on traffic. Additionally, more than 74,000 vehicles were fitted with radium reflectors to prevent road accidents.
From Jan 1 to Jan 31, over 44,000 cases of unauthorised vehicle parking on roads were recorded, resulting in fines exceeding Rs 2 crore. Moreover, 2,111 cases of drunk driving were registered under the MV Act. The statement said over 26,000 cases for not wearing seatbelts, more than 88,000 cases for not wearing helmets, over 24,000 cases of speeding, and more than 18,000 cases of wrong-side driving were recorded during the month.
During this special drive, numerous programmes were organised for citizens using highways, and road safety workshops were conducted at public places and in schools and colleges. Eye check-up camps were also organised at several places with the help of voluntary organisations, the statement said.
