City traffic police penalised 50 vehicle owners on Thursday for using unauthorised metal plates with inscriptions identifying them as govt officials, and beacons illegally. The special drive was conducted by the traffic cops across the city on Christmas evening with the aim to stopping troublemakers attempting to cause disruptions during the celebration.

City Traffic SP Aprajit Lohan said the traffic police conducted a thorough vehicle checking drive along JP Ganga Path, Atal Path, and Bailey Road. “They targeted those who flouted traffic regulations by using VIP lights, hooters, dome lights, and tinted glass. Authorities penalised 50 vehicles for using beacons and govt nameplates. Six individuals were found drunk, with three facing FIRs for drunk-driving at Digha police station. The offenders included both local residents and visitors celebrating the Christmas,” he said.

Addressing the reporters here on Thursday, the SP said through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and HHD (hand-held) machines, authorities collected approximately INR28 lakh in fines from 2,400 vehicles on Christmas Day in the state capital. “The drive was specifically against the unauthorised use of nameplates on private vehicles. Whilst govt vehicles with proper authorisation may display official nameplates, private vehicles are prohibited from doing so. The drive will continue further,” Lohan said.

The arrested offenders were identified as Gopal Kumar (21), Neeraj Kumar (28), Kundan Kumar (23) from Nalanda, Amarnath Kumar (40) and Anil Kumar (36) from Saran, and Pritam Kumar (50) from Patna.
