At this point, it’s no secret that large electric trucks are not doing well as products. The best-selling electric truck just got canceled, automakers are pulling back to focus on extended-range EVs with gas engines, and almost every model in the segment regularly relies on steep incentives. But while that can be bad news for manufacturers, it’s great news for owners, as a new video from YouTube channel HeyJohn shows.
John purchased a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV LT at the end of 2024, and in his latest video, he breaks down what it’s been like to own this vehicle. And like every electric truck owner I’ve met in person, John is over the moon. He loves the Silverado EV, and across 22,820 miles, he hasn’t had one real issue with the truck.
He bought it specifically because he liked the idea of cheaper running costs. But in a year of ownership, it’s the overall experience that’s really won him over. The Silverado EV—with its 12,500-pound towing capacity and absurd 421-mile range—is just a better all-around truck than anything with an internal combustion engine.
“I prefer to tow with this truck now, rather than my gas or diesel, he says. “There’s just plenty of power.” He later adds that the Silverado EV is also the most comfortable truck, too, with none of the high-revving sounds of his gas truck or loud clatter of his diesel.

Combined with no real maintenance concerns, he’s happy. But like many electric truck fans, he also got a crazy deal. Including the since-deceased $7,500 tax credit, John says he got over $17,000 off the price of the Silverado EV. That was enough to get it to be roughly the same price as a gas alternative, making it a no-brainer for him.
But that itself belies the issue with the EV truck segment. Electric trucks are better, but the giant batteries they need to tow long distances do not come cheap. That makes electric pickups far more expensive than their gas counterparts. That makes them tough to sell, requiring heavy incentives that often make them unprofitable for automakers.
That’s the conundrum of electric trucks in 2025. They’re great, but no one can profitably sell the electric trucks consumers want at a price they’re willing to pay. That’s bad news for new car companies and the market.
But if you find a heavily discounted new or used electric truck, it could be great news for you.
